The Physician for the Sick (Luke 5:27-32)

So far in Luke’s gospel, we’ve seen that Jesus came “to proclaim good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18; 4:43). The calling of Levi, and Jesus’ association with tax collectors and sinners, here in this passage is a powerful demonstration of this mission of redemption, but the Pharisees and scribes are offended. Yet this is more than just a story of someone being called to follow Jesus. It’s a story of someone who knew they were spiritually sick and others who thought they were the picture of health. In this sermon, guest preacher Claude Valdes unpacks these verses to reveal a profound picture of true repentance, the spiritual sickness that pervades every heart, and the glorious good news of salvation in Christ Jesus.
