Wealth and the Kingdom of God (Luke 18:18-30)

“And a ruler asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'” (Luke 18:18). This rich, young man could not have asked Jesus a more important question.  However, he was unprepared to hear the answer, for when he heard it, “he became very sad” (Luke 18:23), and ” went away sorrowful” (Mark 10:22). What reply from the Lord Jesus Christ could have made this man—who would have appeared to others as being the prime candidate for entering the kingdom of God—so disheartened? What could cause someone to walk away from inheriting eternal life? In this sermon, Pastor Dave reveals the underlying motives behind the ruler’s question, the central issue of fallen man’s heart, and the hope of the gospel of salvation by God’s grace.
