Why we give
We give because we are motivated by the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, who left behind the riches and glory of His heavenly kingdom to come to earth and willingly gave His life so that we could keep ours. Giving strengthens our devotion and dependence on Christ as we trust in His provision rather than our own self-sufficiency and merits. We give so that the work of the kingdom of God might be advanced in the local body, and that the gospel might be declared in our community and to the nations.
“But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:7-9)
How we give
We give honestly and humbly, not “practicing [our] righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them” (Matthew 6:1), but to our God and Father, out of delight in His excellencies. We give joyfully and willingly, not because we expect and demand earthly prosperity, but because we understand the grace of God and know that He will bless and provide for His children.
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
